Use of mobile phones to provide access to skilled birth attendants at delivery to address maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Wired mothers are pregnant women linked to a primary health care unit through use of mobile phones and who are receiving standard SMS reminders for care appointments. Women can call the primary provider in case of acute or non acute problems. The study also aims to evaluate the health system's response in relation to obstetric emergencies when using mobile phones to strengthen communication between different levels (such as from traditional birth attendants to referral hospital). Key project partners include Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Health Sector program Support Zanzibar, and the University of Copenhagen. The project ran from January 2009 to December 2010.
