Your Used Cell Phone Could Save a Life at the mHealth Summit
Do you have any old cell phones lying around? Bring them to Booth #729 at the mHealth Summit!
As the host of the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) Meeting, the George Washington University has made a Commitment to Action – a concrete plan to address a major global challenge – by collecting 20,000 used cell phones and portable electronics by March 2012. Working with Hope Phones and Medica Mobile, the devices will be recycled and the proceeds will go to fund maternal and child mobile health technology projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nepal. You can watch ABC News’ Good Morning America coverage of GW’s kick-off rally featuring special guests Chelsea Clinton and Christy Turlington Burns here.
Donating your used phone can make a big difference. The U.S. alone discards about 500,000 phones every day which in turn pollute our environment. Instead of throwing those phones away, used cell phones can be recycled and the proceeds of that effort are invested in purchasing new equipment and deploying it in the field.
Stop by booth #729 to drop off your used cell phones and portable electronics (i.e. iPods, digital cameras, etc.). If you didn’t bring your used cell phone, you can also pick up pre-paid envelopes to take home to mail in your devices.
Your generous used cell phone donation will help create a network of safety to prevent maternal and newborn deaths. The proceeds of the recycled phones will fund programs that train and equip mothers, families, communities and community health workers to ensure skilled attendants at birth, track high-risk pregnancies, and to get mothers with complications to emergency medical care within the critical first two hours after birth. Thank you for your contribution!
